Park Avenue Mural Unveiled on Balboa Island

On October 27, 2024, Newport Beach residents gathered on Balboa Island to celebrate the unveiling of the new Park Avenue Mural, which was fully funded by Balboa Island families and painted by local Balboa Island artist Barbara Abbott. The Park Avenue Mural depicts seven iconic Balboa Island scenes, including the ferry and the frozen banana stand. After Barbara finalized the creations, her artwork was digitized and converted into 337,963 weatherproof tiles that were then individually installed onto the space. City Arts Commission Chair Melissa Kandel and City Arts Commissioner Maureen Flanagan were in attendance at the event.

7th Annual Halloween Spooktacular at Mariners Park

The 2024 annual Halloween Spooktacular was held on October 26 at Mariners Park. During the event, the City Arts Commission hosted its inaugural "Paint a Pumpkin" booth, which saw hundreds of parents and children painting pumpkins that they were able to take home. The booth also featured massive, custom hand-carved pumpkins on display by award-winning, internationally renowned artist Joseph Yakovetic. Thank you to Stu News for publishing a recap of the happenings at the "Paint a Pumpkin" booth!

By the numbers:

Yakovetic, who has illustrated over 50 books, carved four giant "Big Mac" pumpkins: the City's logo, event "Spooktacular" artwork, the iconic Wedge lifeguard tower, and of course, Mickey Mouse!

Participants used more than a dozen colors of paint, stencils, and brushes to make their spooky creations.

The largest display pumpkin weighed in at 65 pounds.
